A long time coming

Ok, so I’ve been writing this fantasy saga for around three years. I’m 327 000 words in (third part) and finally the character that I first envisioned at the start shows her true colours. It’s not been easy to do as I love the character and the story and won’t have it turn into a horror novel, so here she is: the vamp.
Bernie sat on the roof of Arrborn’s house watching a cat stalk a mouse in the alleyway by the front door but what the cat did not know was that a larger predator was fast asleep at the other end of the alley and would not appreciate being woken up by a cat. A muted yelp was the last sound that the cat would ever make as the terrified mouse ran as fast as its scurrying feet could carry it. Bernie chuckled quietly to herself as she stood up and stretched out her arms. As she did so the darkest of imaginable purple straps appeared all over her body wrapping her in their skin tight embrace. Her long black hair billowed momentarily like a sail seizing the full strength of a storm. She lowered her head turning her eyes toward Oumtuk where an old score was about to be settled. Bernie turned toward the north and sprang from Arrborn’s roof landing silently on another rooftop three streets away. She leapt again snatching a small bat from the air which she held to her mouth and drained the creature of its life until it was a dried out husk which she dropped from her hand like a child’s toy glider that smashed into the houses below disintegrating in a cloud of dust. Bernie smiled to herself, energised, she half -leapt-half-flew across the city of El Aroi, clearing the mouth of the Great Cauldron in a single bound. Soon she was ascending the mountains that separated Grimlaw from Oumtuk snatching up small creatures as she went infusing their lives with her own. She was going to need something more substantial for the days ahead as she did not wish Emun to discover her true nature…
